Beef Netflix - What We Know So Far
Steven Yeun has had quite a career since his big break on "The Walking Dead" in 2010. After playing Glenn Rhee on the popular series for seven seasons, he's gone on to appear in several films, including "Okja," "Sorry to Bother You," and "Minari," and he's also lent his vocal talents to a few animated series. However, since leaving "The Walking Dead," Yeun hasn't had a regular role in a live-action television series — but that's about to change.
In March, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Yeun is set to star in and executive produce a comedy-drama series titled "Beef," which Netflix won the rights to after an impressive bidding war. After his film "Minari" received such critical acclaim, it's no surprise that Yeun is teaming up with A24 once again on this next TV endeavor. He's also set to work side-by-side with the hilarious Ali Wong, whose side-splitting Netflix comedy special "Baby Cobra" shot her to fame in 2016.
Here's everything we know so far about the release date, cast, and plot of Netflix's "Beef."
When will Beef premiere?
Although we've gotten few updates regarding where "Beef" will stream and who's set to be involved in the show's production, we, unfortunately, don't know many details beyond that. We also don't know when "Beef" is scheduled to premiere, though it seems like it's still in the early stages of development. Here's hoping we won't have to wait much longer for an official announcement.
Jinny Howe, the VP of Drama Development, Original Series at Netflix, released a statement about the streaming platform's excitement to collaborate with Yeun, Wong, and the show's creator, Lee Sung Jin: "We are incredibly excited to collaborate with Lee Sung Jin and help bring this rich series to life along with the inimitable Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. Sung Jin has created a bold and, at times, outrageous world. It is an honest and powerful character study of two people who go about searching for connection in the unlikeliest of ways" (via THR).
Who is in the cast of Beef?
The only confirmed actors set to star in "Beef" are Steve Yeun and Ali Wong, though their roles haven't been revealed. Thankfully, an exclusive report from Murphy's Multiverse has given us an inside look at some of the characters we'll meet in "Beef," apart from who will be playing them. First, the outlet revealed that there would be a series regular named George, who they noted is an attractive, early 30s-40s Japanese-American that's married to a woman named Amy. George is also a ceramicist and "the son of a renowned architect and designer," who is "the type who wears full bicycle gear and rides hundreds of miles every morning while listening to the Tom Ferriss podcast." Additionally, George and Amy have a shy young daughter named June.
"Beef" will also feature a Korean-American man named Isaac, who's set to be in his 30s-40s as well. According to the character description, Isaac has two cousins named Danny and Paul (who we assume we'll be meeting at some point), he's a big, muscular guy who was recently in jail, and he's not afraid to break the rules to protect his family. The final character description belongs to 60-year-old Fumi, George's mother. She's said to be elegant, attractive, artistic, and a caring grandmother to June.
We can't wait to learn more about which actors we'll see in the roles of George, Amy, and all the others.
What is the plot of Beef?
Unfortunately, not much is known about the plot of "Beef" at this point, either. According to THR, the official series description reveals that "Beef will follow two people involved in a road rage incident, both of whom let it burrow into their minds until it slowly consumes their every thought and action."
Additionally, Lee Sung Jin revealed that "Beef" is based on his lived experience. "Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, A24, and Netflix — it's a dream team, and I'm honored to be collaborating with them," said Lee, per Deadline. "I'm also grateful to the guy who yelled at me in traffic three years ago. I did not let it go, and now we have a show."
