The Lost Symbol Season 2 - Will It Ever Happen?
"The Lost Symbol" was a television adaptation of the third novel in Dan Brown's book series about fictional Harvard University professor Robert Langdon. The exploits of the famed symbologist had previously been adapted for the big screen in movies like "The Da Vinci Code," "Angels & Demons," and "Inferno." Peacock's "The Lost Symbol" was a prequel series that explored Langdon's career before the events of that trilogy. But with the end of the show's first season, it looks like the streamer has closed the book on future adventures.
On January 24, 2022, Deadline broke the news that "The Lost Symbol" was ending its run after just one season. At the time of writing, no specific reasons for this decision were given. In a statement to Deadline, a Peacock representative said, "We were so proud to bring this action-packed mystery thriller to our members and enjoyed watching this compelling series unfold with a satisfying, complete story." This would seem to imply that the Season 1 finale was intended to be the series finale, however, fans of the show will still likely be left feeling that there is more to the mystery yet to be solved.
In the age of shows like "One Day at a Time" and "Manifest" being brought back from the dead for additional seasons, is it possible that "The Lost Symbol" will get a similar resurrection? Let's examine the clues.
What are the odds of there being a Season 2 of The Lost Symbol?
Before we can determine whether or not "The Lost Symbol" could be brought back for a second season, let's first look at some potential contributing factors to the series' cancelation. When NBC aired the pilot of "The Lost Symbol" as a special presentation during its primetime lineup in November 2021, it didn't exactly pull in great ratings, according to The TV Ratings Guide. While this doesn't necessarily mean the series itself was a total flop, it does imply a potential lack of the kind of broad enthusiasm or interest in the show that Peacock may have been hoping to generate. And we can see evidence of a potential lack of enthusiasm elsewhere.
On Rotten Tomatoes, "The Lost Symbol" has a mediocre 54% critic's score. Plenty of shows go on to have multiple seasons despite not being loved by critics, but when we look over at the audience score for the series, we can see that, at the time of writing, it is also at a measly 53%. And while "The Lost Symbol" surely has its fans, it doesn't appear that they are mobilizing in the aftermath of its cancelation. When "Manifest" was canceled, there was a huge response from fans of the series on social media to try and get another network or streamer to revive the show. As of now, there doesn't appear to be a similar campaign for "The Lost Symbol."
With all that in mind, is it still possible that "The Lost Symbol" will continue? Based on where things stand at the time of writing, the answer seems to be that it is possible, but not probable. Another network could swoop in to save the series, or Peacock could reverse course and greenlight another adventure for Langdon. But there just doesn't seem to be the kind of enthusiasm from the streamer or audiences needed to make that happen.
