Endgame Directors Apologize To Tom Holland
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo broke the hearts of millions of Marvelites with Avengers: Infinity War, the last few minutes of which featured several of fans' favorite characters crumbling away into space dust at the snap of Thanos' fingers. The duo may have reveled in the shock factor of the eleventh-hour twist, but leading up to the release of Avengers: Endgame, which will explore the consequences of Thanos' Decimation, the Russos have issued an apology to the fallen hero who had arguably the most emotional death.
Taking to Twitter, Joe Russo apologized to Spider-Man actor Tom Holland for dusting him in Avengers: Infinity War.
Joe made the apology on behalf of both himself and his brother Anthony, as the filmmaking duo have a joint Twitter account, and did so in the caption of a video of him and Thor star Chris Hemsworth riding the Tron Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland Park during the China leg of the Avengers: Endgame press tour.
"Missing you @TomHolland1996 and @MarkRuffalo this from last year boys? Sorry we dusted you Tom. Had a blast with @chrishemsworth this year," the caption reads.
It's clear that the tweet is a nod to the snap of Holland and Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo riding the futuristic rollercoaster when the Infinity War cast stopped in China last year. When the photo first made its way onto the internet, fans joked that Holland and Ruffalo — dubbed the "Spoiler Bros." for their shared proclivity for spilling details that are meant to be kept secret — weren't simply having fun on a cool 'coaster at Shanghai Disneyland, but that they were attempting to make an escape after heaving leaked sensitive information about Infinity War.
Holland has managed to keep an uncharacteristically tight lip when it comes to Endgame spoiler — but that's because Spider-Man is, as far as anyone knows, dead and because Holland isn't involved in the Endgame press tour. Ruffalo, on the other hand, was jokingly "fired" after he supposedly leaked the Endgame title during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His past spoiler-spilling snafus combined with his apparent absence from this overseas stint promoting Endgame has spurred some fans to quip that Ruffalo was left out because he yet again leaked precious intel. We doubt that's truly the case, but hey, it does make sense.
It warms the heart to hear the Russos apologize to Holland for dusting him in Avengers: Infinity War. Watching New York's friendly neighborhood hero fade away in the arms of his mentor, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), while telling him he doesn't "feel so good" and doesn't "want to go" was almost too much to bear. The Russo brothers' joint "sorry" retroactively cushions the blow.
What it doesn't do, however, is give us any clue about the chances Spider-Man will come back to life in Endgame.
There are several ways the ending of Infinity War could be reversed — from Nebula (Karen Gillan) snatching the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos (Josh Brolin) and undoing the Snap to Gamora (Zoe Saldana) somehow unleashing her soul and the souls of the fallen (assuming they're all with her) from the Soul Stone to Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) using her powers to defeat Thanos and help resurrect the dead. The most popular theory, though, is the idea that the surviving heroes will gear up in their slick Quantum Realm suit-like costumes and travel through time — as far back as the Battle of New York that took place in the first Avengers film — to put a stop to Thanos before he even started his rein of terror on Earth.
Many believe that Endgame will revisit the battle that birthed the Original Six Avengers, seeing the heroes again defeat Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and the army of Chitauri that actually belonged to Thanos. In May of 2018, a behind-the-scenes snap of Tom Hiddleston filming what appears to be an imprisonment scene reminiscent of the one featured in The Avengers surfaced online. The muzzle over his face, his green-and-gold costume, and what looks like the Tesseract in Loki's hands seem signal that this isn't a scene that takes place in the present day, and helps substantiate the claim that Avengers: Endgame will implement time travel to revive the killed-off heroes.
But how will it all fit together? Well, if Endgame truly does wind the clock back to the Battle of New York, the Avengers might pay Loki a little visit and swipe the Space Stone from the Tesseract resting in his hands and nab the Mind Stone from his Sceptre. With two Infinity Stones in their possession, Earth's Mightiest Heroes could continue moving through time and collecting the remaining four Stones before returning to the present. Thanos may still have the Infinity Gauntlet, but he wouldn't be able to execute his plans without the Stones powering it up. All that would be left for the Avengers and co. to do is grab hold of the Gauntlet themselves, slide the Stones into place, undo Thanos' Decimation, and resurrect the heroes who disintegrated — including good ol' Spider-Man.
It isn't long now until the world will discover what really goes down in Avengers: Endgame. The film will open in theaters on Friday, April 26.
