Marvel Finally Gave Fans The Fantastic Four News They've Been Waiting For
On December 10, 2020, Disney began bombarding fans with news about some of their favorite franchises — unveiling upcoming films, TV shows, and more at their virtual Investor's Day event. The innumerable Star Wars announcements were nothing to shake a lightsaber at, but not to be outdone, Marvel Studios came out swinging with a smattering of noteworthy reveals as well.
From the announcement of a Skrull-centric Secret Invasion series to the long-awaited drop of the inaugural trailer for Tom Hiddleston's Loki show, there's plenty for audiences new and old to look forward to in the coming phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, one of the biggest titles to come out of this event puts the spotlight back onto Marvel's first family: the Fantastic Four.
As reported on the Marvel Studios Twitter page, Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, and Sue and Johnny Storm will receive their MCU introductions via Spider-Man 3 director Jon Watts. As of this writing, the reboot doesn't have an attached release date, meaning it's still quite a ways off, but when the Fantastic Four finally arrive in the blockbuster franchise, all of the waiting will prove worth it.
The Fantastic Four's MCU arrival is long overdue
It's no secret to anyone that the Fantastic Four's cinematic track record is less than stellar, and that's putting it mildly. Not counting the unreleased 1994 feature, the group has graced the silver screen on three separate occasions across two continuities while under the 20th Century Fox banner. Sadly, none managed to do them justice, and as a result, their viability as a film property began to wane — prompting fans to cry out for Marvel Studios to take the reigns of such beloved characters.
Their pleas certainly didn't fall on deaf ears, as Disney's purchase of 20th Century meant the rights to the Fantastic Four and their extensive rogues' gallery reverted back to Marvel. At last, Kevin Feige and his fellow creatives could begin brainstorming how to integrate the iconic team into the expansive MCU, and finally give them a proper adaptation reflective of their legendary status in the comic world.
It's safe to say that the first family's return to movie theaters everywhere is in good hands, and will surely be a cause for celebration.
